Service Description

When we are new into this world, we rely on others to help us manage our needs and our emotions. If the people we rely on to interpret and meet our needs are unreliable or even hurtful, we by necessity need to make creative adaptations to attempt to manage our experiences and needs for ourselves. These adaptations then become habitual and slip from our conscious awareness and can become addictions. Topics that will be covered will include: • key Gestalt principles • management and recovery from painful experiences • our need for habits • the difficulty in changing habits • the role of addictions in managing our experiences • contact (what it means, how it can become scary and how to start to make contact again) • blocks to meaningful contact • the challenge of accepting all of our parts • helping clients to understand themselves better by encouraging them to notice how they are in the world and with us. Jon Wilson Cooper is a Gestalt Psychotherapist, Trainer and Supervisor and Director of The Albany Centre in St Albans. Jon has over 21 years experience training counsellors and psychotherapists and over 35 years of working therapeutically with a range of clients including extensive experience of working with addictions.
