A CBT approach to Somatisation

What is Somatisation?

Service Description

Do you have clients from time to time who present with physical symptoms which accompany their emotional distress? For example, suffering from migraine, stomach problems, exhaustion or other physical symptoms are all examples of somatisation. But these instances are often or can be temporary, but they become a clinical issue when they cause prolonged and severe distress. Somatisation is the word we use for the physical (or body) expression of stress and emotions through the mind-body connection. We all somatise. In fact, up to 12% of doctors' visits are for somatic symptoms. Somatic symptoms are very real. The day will attempt to help counsellors to work with the emotional root of some of these physical presentations and also our own attitudes to illness and disease. We will be looking at DSM categories and the causation of conditions.
